A Valentine's Day Winner!

As a child when someone asked me what I wanted to be when I grow up I would say I wanted to be a mommy. Then I had ovarian cancer when I was 15 and lost one of my ovaries. I had multiple surgeries and lost 1/2 of the other one too. After that I never held hope that I would have a child of my own. I married my best friend in 2005. After a couple of years of marriage he talked me into just trying to have a child. But I had no hope. Then after 13 months something amazing happened--I was pregnant. I went through early pregnancy in a daze, not really believing I was going to be given such a gift. And then we found out it was a girl. A girl, how perfect!

Of course, pregnancy was not easy for me. Pregnancy-Induced Hypertension at 20 weeks. Preeclampsia and strict bed rest at 27 weeks. In and out of the hospital six times before I finally delivered at 37 weeks. My Preeclampsia turned into Eclampsia during delivery. But, she and I survived.

When I finally got to hold her in the recovery room and our eyes met for the first time, well, I was in love. An instant, powerful, would-give-my-life-for-her-in-a-second, kind of love. I've never experienced anything like it. And the most amazing thing is that this love has only grown bigger and bigger. She turned a year old last week. Every day I feel more blessed to be her mother. What an amazing gift I have been given!

As a self-proclaimed accessories girl, it's only natural that I'd fall head over well-dressed-heels for this delicious brand. There's nothing cuter than wildly colorful tights or socks on a little one, and Trumpette takes the cake on fun socks, if you ask me. But even more drool-worthy? These itty bitty mocs!

Seriously, can it get any cuter? (The only answer to that is a solid "no.") I'll take one in every color, thanks.

Trumpette's first big seller was "The Perfect Little Dozen" - a traditional egg crate filled with 12 pairs of baby socks in a rainbow of colors. The old school ones really were in actual brown egg crates... it was (and still is) one of my favorite go-to baby shower gifts. Just plain adorable, but incredibly practical too!

You've probably also seen their famous Mary Jane socks on little fashionistas around town. And the thing mommas love about Trumpette socks? They stay on.

The photographer, Laura, specializes in family, children, and pet portraiture. A New Year...

Mommas, I hope your new year has gotten off to a great start! Here's to a fabulous and fashionable 2010 for all! As with every new year, this one brings new changes and challenges, new goals, new aspirations... what are some of yours?

Well, one big change happening here... you may've noticed most of my Javis Davis ads and pics have been removed. The gals there have decided to discontinue the design partner program, so I'll no longer be selling their products. They're still very much in business and are mostly web-based, so you'll still find me gabbing about them from time to time. I have been and will always be a huge fan of theirs, and you can bet your britches that my future nusery will be outfitted head-to-toe in Javis Davis.

I'm still here though, mommas. So don't go anywhere! You'll probably find my content moving more and more toward maternity style and fashion, but you can look for odds and ends on hot items for baby, kid, and the nursery as well. Stay warm out there, and stay tuned!

Whether they're sporting a baby bump or not, women across the country have fallen for Spanx body shapers in a big way. And lucky for you, mommas, the Atlanta-based company is continually looking for volunteers to do product testing. In short, volunteers receive products in the mail... wear them as much as they can in the given time frame... then fill out an online survey giving feedback on the products. What's one of my favorite things about fall? Little girls running around in colorful tights. If I wouldn't get some strange looks, I might wear these myself. But it's a little harder to get away with once you get out of grade school...

And if you ask me, the authority on fabulously fun tights for girls is Hanna Andersson. This is a favorite brand of mine that's been around for over 20 years. There are a lot of "Mommy & Me" type looks in the catalog - not my favorite. But if you can get past that, the kids' clothes are just delicious. But especially tasty this season is their huge selection of tights and leggings.

Atlanta moms, you can find Hanna Andersson stores at Perimeter Mall and Phipps Plaza. I do encourage you to visit a store if you have one nearby. Some catalogs don't do a brand justice and I really think this is one of them. The colors and fabrics are so much more vibrant in person.

How fun are these colors? Even with the dreary, rainy weather we've had here this week, you can't help but smile when you see a little girl in a pair of these.

Baby Registry 101

Perhaps nothing's more intimidating as a first time expectant mom than walking into Babies 'R Us amid all that... STUFF. (What is all that stuff anyway?) Creating your baby registry can be completely overwhelming. Whether you're recruiting the help of an experienced mom or doing the research yourself, there's a lot to sort through before discovering what you and baby really need.

In an effort to help you new mommas out, I sent out a survey earlier this year asking moms about their registry experiences. The "must-haves" checklist at Babies 'R Us is incredibly long. Surely, I thought, not ALL of these items are "must-haves." Our mothers didn't have all this stuff 30 years ago and somehow we came out OK. So what items are really necessary for baby and what items can you pass on? Where do you go and how the heck do you go about it?!

As with any registry - baby or wedding - take your time. There's no real need to knock it all out in one trip. It may take several trips to the store and a few rounds online before you get your registry exactly where you want it. So don't feel like you have to rush through it!

The Real Must-Haves

I asked moms to take a look at the monstrous Babies 'R Us list and name five items that were truly MUST haves. Keep in mind everyone has different experiences and certainly every baby is different, but there were a lot of commonalities in the answers. The three items that were named over and over as must-haves were LOTS of burp cloths, a white noise machine, and the Bumbo seat.

I gotta say, babies look so stinkin' cute propped up in a Bumbo. A lot of moms I know are in love with these and use them a lot. You can plop a tot as young as 3 months old in one of these seats. A couple of other items moms mentioned as must-haves were extra crib sheets and a Boppy pillow.

Like anything else, the Boppy doesn't always work for everyone. One of my good friends who's a new momma sang her praises for "My Breast Friend" - another breast feeding pillow product. She said it worked SO much better for her over the Boppy. It actually straps on to your waist and is a lot sturdier than a Boppy.

Lots of options, huh? It certainly helps to have friends to bounce ideas around with... I also asked moms about one item they didn't register for initially but wished they had. The overwhelming answer was a white noise / sound machine. I guarantee you we'll be getting one of these - we've got three crazy dogs that make a bunch of noise. So anything that'll help block them out in baby's room will be a definite must-have on my list.

What You Can Do Without

Like I said, everyone's must-have list is going to look a little different. But when I asked moms what items were absolutely NOT a must, the one product that came up over and over (and over and over) was... the wipe warmer.

And apparently my mommas were not alone. Still need convincing? Check out this article with 10 reasons not to buy a wipe warmer. Hmm.... so you tell me, does anyone have one of these and actually like it? Do tell because there were certainly some passionate answers about the wipe warmer! Very interesting.

Items moms registered for but did NOT end up using included (in addition to the wipe warmer) a Diaper Genie (or other brand) and certain gear their particular babies didn't take to, like slings, swings or bouncy seats. That's a big point to keep in mind, mommas. You don't know what your baby is going to be into... some love swings, some don't. Some do well in bouncy seats and others will wail till the cows come home. Your own kids may even like different things - so don't think your second child will love all the same things your first one did. Same goes for types of bottles and pacifiers... those little suckers can be picky. So for goodness sake don't register for 40 of one type of bottle and wash them all before baby arrives only to find out he prefers a different brand altogether. Register for them if you want, but hold off on opening ALL of them till you're sure Junior is pleased.

Ways to Save

Registries can be great - especially when you're blessed with lots of friends and family that'll load you up with everything you need (and more) before baby arrives. But a lot of us will still need to get some things on our own and will certainly need more and more as baby grows. So where can we save?

Well, not sure if you know... but there are a LOT of babies out there and they don't stay babies for long. Translation: There's a ridiculous amount of second-hand baby gear and whatnot out there looking for a new home. Now I am all about doing a posh nursery and getting fun new things for the baby's room, but when it comes to all those obnoxiously bright bouncers and swings and other toys that end up taking over your house... second hand sounds good to me. Garage sales are great for baby and kids' items. You can also find ridiculous deals on CraigsList and other sites where people are just trying to get rid of stuff. And of course, another great source - friends! Take those hand-me-downs with a smile so you can spend your hard-earned money on more fun things.

Again, your baby may be pretty particular when it comes to bottles and bouncers. If you're looking to cut some corners early on, wait till baby arrives before investing a lot of money into any particular brand or type of toy. Borrow some different types of swings and bouncers from friends to see what baby prefers. And certainly, wherever you register or buy baby products, pay attention to return policies. Most of the mommas I surveyed had nothing but love for Babies 'R Us. And as much as I love Target, the consensus was that registering for baby here was a "royal pain." True, Target's return policy in general is pretty strict - so do keep that in mind if you plan to register there. I've heard the same complaint on wedding registries at Target. The merchandise is great, but the return policies are very difficult to get around.

And you do want to be able to return things you don't end up needing. You're sure to get a ton of baby clothes (so don't even register for these - no one in my survey did). And the majority of clothes you'll get will be sized 0-3 months. Before you go ripping off those tags and running everything through the wash, make sure baby will even be able to wear them! You might have a 9 pounder that'll skip right over the 0-3 month sizes.

So wow... where are we in all of this? Did I just overwhelm you even more? The key is to have a plan and not to rush. Do some research on your own before hitting the stores. Babies 'R Us and Amazon have a lot of online reviews on products, and there are a ton of great books out there, like Baby Bargains, that will give you the run-down on what's hot and what's not. And certainly seek the help of your friends who have been-there-done-that. The truth is, your registry's not going to be perfect. You're going to put things on there you'll never end up using and you'll miss things that you'll have to go back for later. But don't worry about getting it just right... do a little homework first and do the best you can. Pick stores that are easy to work with - especially on returns - and keep up with your receipts.

One other site I want you to check out for some great tell-it-like-it-is advice on baby registries is Alpha Mom. This is a fab site to bookmark for any mom, but I especially love the registry tips - a must read! So mommas, do your research and get out there with that registry gun and have some fun! (Actually, let Dad have the gun... that keeps him in the game.)

Baby furniture? Check. Crib bedding? Check, check. Closet full of baby clothes? Triple check. You've got the basics covered, but it's really the little details that can take your nursery from "aw, that's cute" to "Whoah, this is amazing!" It's the original pieces hanging on the wall, the personal touches on shelves, the light fixtures, the creative use of paint on walls, unexpected details in trim and other accessories that really bring the WOW-factor to a room. Though many see these as mere afterthoughts, I find the most fun in the details. It's in those details that style becomes truly personal.

One easy little detail that can add loads of pizazz to a child's room or bath? Some fabulous knobs, of course! If you're feeling the hand-painted look, you're also sure to love these colorful round knobs by Lulu and Daisy. Like Sophie Lane, they also do custom orders! These are a bit more affordable though, starting at only $10 a pop. Customization is an extra $5 per knob. All Lulu and Daisy knobs are hand-painted and come in two different sizes.

And for a look that's a little different, check out these fab jeweled knobs by Susan Goldstick. These whimsical knobs and pulls make me think of Alice in Wonderland...

These knobs have a lot of great detail and, rightfully so, will set you back a little more than the simpler knobs. Susan Goldstick's collection starts at $22 per knob and quickly climbs. But aren't these pieces gorgeous? Do be careful with the more pointy knobs. We don't want Junior poking his eye out as soon as he becomes mobile. If you like this look, consider using it as a fancy-schmancy hook or on a cabinet far out of baby's reach.

If you know me at all, you know I love everything J. Crew. So it's no surprise that I'm a big sucker for their crewcuts collection for kids. J. Crew has sold some children's items here and there in the past, but a couple of years ago they officially launched their crewcuts line for ages 2-12.

You can find these mini J. Crew items in a selection of J. Crew stores and a handful of actual crewcuts stores, but you'll find the most selection online.

Now are these the most affordable children's clothes? Momma, please. If you're me, you're only shopping here for two reasons... either you're looking for a fabulous formal outfit for your child to wear in a wedding or other special occasion, OR you're hitting a big sale. And J. Crew does have killer sales, so don't count this one out when you see those retail tags. I never pay retail, mommas, and neither should you.

Keep an eye on the sale items online. They don't necessarily match the sale prices in store, so get on J. Crew's mailing list so you can be alerted to new sale items and additional discounts. They are always having promotions for "additional 20%" or "additional 30%" off sale items. You can get some ridiculous deals if you time it right.

If you've got a location near you with the crewcuts collection in store, keep an eye on their sale section as well. Sometimes the store sales will beat the online sales, so you just have to keep tabs on both. Definitely add this one to your shopping rolodex... it's a goodie.

Georgia moms, here's the nitty gritty on the tax-free shopping...

The sales tax exemption pertains to items in three categories:

Articles of Clothing. The exemption applies to articles of clothing and footwear with a sales price at time of purchase of $100 or less per item. There is no monetary limit on a purchase as long as the price of a single item does not exceed $100. Clothing accessories such as handbags, umbrellas, etc. are not exempt. See the lists of exempt and taxable items for more information.

Personal Computers. A single $1,500 or less purchase of a personal computer (PC) and/or related accessories is exempt. The exemption does not require the purchase of a “personal computer base unit” (tower, desktop, laptop) and is extended to peripheral devices such as modems, printers, speakers, non-recreational software, etc. If a single purchase exceeds the $1,500 maximum the entire purchase is taxable. A single purchase is considered the total of all sales made to a customer in one visit to a store. See the lists of exempt and taxable items for more information.

General School Supplies. The exemption applies to the purchase of general school supplies with a sales price at the time of purchase of $20 or less per item. Isn't that a fun name? For years, Zutano has been one of my all-time favorite brands of clothing and accessories for tiny tots. I've given many a Zutano gift to my expectant momma friends. Fab boutiques in the 'burbs are few and far between. Any girl knows a serious shopping trip requires a day in the city. But when I stumble upon a real retail gem in suburbia, I take note. (And so should you.) Gwinnett mommas, here's one to put on your radar...

Bambaroos, located off Hamilton Mill just west of I-85, is a fabulous spot for the best in trendy kids' clothing and gifts. I was amazed at the sheer size of the place, first of all - the selection is huge. Each section of the store is beautifully pieced together with a gorgeous collection of pint-sized clothing and accessories. You can't help but smile when you walk in... it's a very *happy* store. And many, many things were on sale. Lots of great markdowns throughout the store! In the back corner of the shop is a collection of maternity items hand-picked by the owner, as well as a selection of trendy diaper bags and other accessories for mom.

If you're in the area, be sure to pop by this great boutique on Friday for some big savings! You know I love style on a dime. Who doesn't? Bambaroos also has an online store accessible to stylish mommas and tots everywhere. The site's a work in progress, per Emily, the store manager. So the website may be less than top notch, but don't let that fool you. This sweet shop gets an A+ from me.
